Do freebies given by political parties bridge the financial gap?

The financial divide between privileged and underprivileged – A problem that political parties have left unresolved for ages. Should people come forward to bridge this gap? -         J. Murali Krishnan   Election is a celebration not only for the political parties but also for people who wait for announcements made by them which could be distribution of cash to offering subsidies and free schemes. While majority of the political parties focus on people from the underprivileged section of the society, two crucial questions linger in a common man’s mind. Do freebies and subsidies really help the poor? Are they really bridging the financial gap between the privileged and the underprivileged? Welfare schemes like free mid-day meal and  breakfast scheme in  government and government-aided schools, free books and notebooks to school children, PDS, etc. do benefit a major chunk of people. However, it’s been years since these welfare...

Who are these heroes and heroines?

Day before yesterday a friend of mine sent me a short video clip. It was about a man who saved nearly 600 children from death during the Holocaust. Until I saw that video, neither I knew about him nor his great work of saving so many children from being burnt alive just because they were Jews. How many of us know or study about such people in schools and colleges? On a comparison note, many of us know great many details about many movie stars, sports personnel (particularly popular games like Cricket, Football, Soccer), etc. Such popular faces become heroes and heroines in the lives of so many young children and youth in today's world.  Take a look at some of the skills listed below: Vocal Music Instrumental Music Fine Arts Dance Carpentry Karate Cricket Volleyball Carrom The list can go on and on. But if you think deeply, barring few exceptions which are natural gifts, most of the skills are acquired by a person. In spite of possessing natural gifts, unless the person takes steps ...

A Crow's Nest

Image
The title of this post is very simple. You may wonder what do I have to write about a crow's nest! A crow is just a bird! Oh yeah! It is just not a bird, but is one of the intelligent birds in the world. You would have seen videos or heard stories of how it finds solutions to drink from a bottle or crack open a seed etc. In fact, we have a story to narrate in our culture too. Everyone knows about crows. What is there to write a blog about it? I can read that question in your mind.  In my previous blog, I had written about how an old tree was cut. Many birds used to visit that tree to build their nests. Crows too were regular visitors. Ever since that tree was cut, they started looking for a place to build their nests. They found a Jamun tree in our house. This tree has usually wide branches and is spread across several metres. But we had to cut the branches because of the presence of electric wires. The tree usually shakes so much even if the wind blows a little strong. However, on...

History Gone In Seconds

Many of us say we love nature. If you ask the question "Do you love nature?", irrespective of the age groups, the immediate answer would be "Yes". They won't stop with that. They will start narrating stories of how they used to feed birds, or taking care of calves or water plants etc. Deep inside us, we all want to love nature. But do we really show care and concern when an opportunity strikes? That would probably remain a very big question.  Last week (around the end of May 2024) I was watching something and I couldn't say or do anything about it. We moved to Pammal, a town near Pallavaram on the outskirts of Chennai district in Tamilnadu 19 years ago. Before that, we were living in North Madras. The place lacks trees, because there is absolutely no place to plant. Wherever you turn, you will see buildings. So, during my childhood days, I hardly had an opportunity to watch a tree growing from the seedling stage. In fact, until I moved to Pammal, I have not ...

Should everyone write?

As I start my writing journey, I am beginning to think whether everyone should write or not. Isn't writing a skill that we acquire over time? If yes, why can't everyone acquire that skill? After all, it requires interest, patience, perseverance, consistency and above all acceptance that we can fail as a writer. But just because someone can write well, can everyone convey a topic in a meaningful way evoking interest in the minds of the readers? I think that may not be possible. Otherwise, we should have thousands of writers. May be we have so many but not everyone reads everybody's writings. We choose our authors based on our interests, our emotion, someone's recommendations, and many more.  It is an undisputable fact that all of us undergo different life experiences. Our learnings from those experiences decide and shape who we are. So when we really want to write, those learnings certainly come to our help. However, choice of words, sentence structure, content, size and...
